Deionization shocks in crossflow

چکیده

Shock electrodialysis is a recently developed electrochemical water treatment method that shows promise for deionization and ionic separations. Although simple models scaling laws have been proposed, predictive theory has not yet emerged to fit experimental data enable system design. Here, we extend analyze existing “leaky membrane” the canonical case of steady shock in crossflow, as recent prototypes. Two-dimensional numerical solutions are compared with analytical boundary-layer approximations data. The accurately reproduces simulation results desalination, both predict collapse desalination factor dimensionless current, scaled incoming convective flux cations. also predicts recovery increase current. Nevertheless, neither approach can quantitatively transition from normal over-limiting which suggests gaps our understanding extreme electrokinetic phenomena porous media.

Deionization shocks in microstructures.

Salt transport in bulk electrolytes is limited by diffusion and advection, but in microstructures with charged surfaces (e.g., microfluidic devices, porous media, soils, or biological tissues) surface conduction and electro-osmotic flow also contribute to ionic fluxes. For small applied voltages, these effects lead to well known linear electrokinetic phenomena. In this paper, we predict some su...

Energy breakdown in capacitive deionization.

We explored the energy loss mechanisms in capacitive deionization (CDI). We hypothesize that resistive and parasitic losses are two main sources of energy losses. We measured contribution from each loss mechanism in water desalination with constant current (CC) charge/discharge cycling. Resistive energy loss is expected to dominate in high current charging cases, as it increases approximately l...

A Comparative Study between Membrane Capacitive Deionization and Capacitive Deionization from Isotherms and Kinetics

Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is a promising technique to achieve the desalination. This novel technique can largely improve the desalination efficiency of capacitive deionization (CDI) by introducing ion-exchange membranes into CDI. This paper presents a comparative study on the electrosorptive performances of CDI and MCDI based on single walled carbon nanotubes electrodes in NaCl so...

Optimization of pulsed jets in crossflow

We use direct numerical simulation to study the mixing behaviour of pulsed jets in crossflow. The pulse is a square wave and the simulations consider several jet velocity ratios and pulse conditions. Our objective is to study the effects of pulsing and to explain the wide range of optimal pulsing conditions found in experimental studies of the problem. The central theme is that pulsing generate...

Computational Fluid Dynamics of Crossflow Filtration in Suspension-Feeding Fishes Keywords: Crossflow filtration, Suspension feeding

Suspension-feeding fishes such as herring and anchovies engulf particle-concentrated water through their mouths and release the water through the posterior oral cavity. Food particles are separated from the water at the gill rakers that act like modern crossflow filters. This paper uses Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques to study the feeding mechanism of these suspension feeders. By u...
